A slightly comedic melodrama is combined with a detective plot. Young New York bank clerk Sam (Patrick Swayze) starts living with artist Molly (Demi Moore). However, their budding happy life is interrupted by Sam's violent death when an unknown gunman shoots him in the street.
But Sam can't leave the girl he loves, so he guides her through life, at least as a ghost. From beyond the grave, he makes a connection to the world of the living through a bizarre medium, a black woman named Oda Mae (Whoopi Goldberg).
