The best-known film adaptation of Jaroslav Hašek's satirical novel combines timeless folk humour and sharp irony, which is not only aimed at the absurdity of the war machine. Rudolf Hrušínský's unforgettable Rudolf Hrušínský portrayed the peculiar hero, who becomes a disaster for his surroundings because of his eager compliance with his superiors' orders, in a film visually inspired by Josef Lada's book illustrations. By spreading the plot over a two-part cycle (the second part, Obediently I Report, was released a year later), Karel Stekly was able to translate the literary source as faithfully as possible to the screen.
