We all have moments when we feel miserable, fed up and everything is falling apart around us. Cheryl (Reese Witherspoon), the protagonist of Wilderness, has been feeling this way for a long time. After the death of her mother and the collapse of her marriage, she thinks she's lost everything. Drugs and random one-night stands also enter her life. And when she feels she has nothing to lose, she makes the most impulsive decision of her life.
With zero wilderness experience and a monstrously heavy backpack, fueled by her remaining willpower, she decides to hike the 1,770-mile alpine trail named the PCT - Pacific Crest Trail - all by herself. Which is the longest, hardest and wildest trail in all of America, running from the Mojave Desert across California and Oregon all the way to Washington State. Cheryl feels that if she can stand up to this test and overcome all the obstacles, she will be standing firmly on her own two feet again at the end of this journey.
However, she is far from knowing what awaits her on this journey. She will set out on the trail very unprepared and many times she will reach the bottom of her strength. From the start, she is overwhelmed by the urge to give up on this crazy venture. Her rucksack rubs her back to the bone, she walks part of the way with only one shoe, she does not avoid encounters with rattlesnakes and bears, and she overcomes devastating heat and snowdrifts. She experiences determination, anger, despair, exhaustion, loneliness, and at the end of her journey she rediscovers her own strength, joy, courage and beauty...
