More than twenty years ago, the first contact between an alien civilization and humanity occurred. People expected a terrifying battle or a major technological advance. Neither happened. The aliens were refugees from their own planet. The creatures were housed in emergency homes in South Africa's District 9 while countries around the world argued about what to do next. Now everyone is running out of patience. Oversight of the aliens has been entrusted to MNU, a private organisation that is indifferent to the fate of the aliens.
But it has the prospect of huge profits if it can make alien weapons that require alien DNA to activate. Tensions between aliens and humans come to a head when the MNU begins moving the residents of District 9 to a new camp. One of the MNU agents, Wikus van der Merwe (Sharlto Copley), becomes infected with an alien virus that begins to alter his DNA. He soon becomes the most wanted man on the planet - the key to unlocking the secrets of alien technology. The terrified man has only one option: hide in District 9...
