The story takes place on a colonized planet named New World. Todd Hewitt (Tom Holland), like the others, believes that a viral germ released by the original inhabitants killed all the women and caused the men and animals on the planet to have their Noise. These are their thoughts, which are freely audible. One day, however, they encounter a mysterious silence. They soon discover the source of the silence: it is a mysterious woman named Viola Eade (Daisy Ridley). Together, under dramatic circumstances, they learn more about the true history of the New World.
