- Description
In 1981, the musical Cats premiered, written by Andrew Lloyd Webber himself based on the book by poet Thomas Stearns Eliot. Despite initially mixed reviews, it eventually became a musical and theatrical hit. It transcended the boundaries of a typical theatre performance: it is currently playing continuously in New York, London, Hamburg, Budapest, and even in Japan and Australia. To date, more than 48 million people have seen it in 42 stage productions around the world. Similar to Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita, the musical Cats represents a unique and significant phenomenon in contemporary music. The story of the musical takes place during the annual Jellicle Cats celebration, when cats regularly gather to choose one of their own as their new leader. Everyone is convinced that different qualities and abilities are needed for this important role. Some emphasise beauty and strength, others lifestyle, sufficient sleep, food and drink, and still others wisdom or love. Deciding who will determine the lives of all cats in the new year is therefore no easy task... The film recording of the stage version does not deny the theatrical stylisation in the scenic and lighting effects, choreography and costumes. The musical is literally packed with stage action by individuals and the choir. In addition to music and singing, it also captivates with its ubiquitous dancing, while mixing the poetic exaggeration of the libretto with surrealistic elements and directorial fantasy...
