After his mother's death, Ben Hawkinson, who has escaped from a gang wanted for murder, joins the circus. It is led by a mysterious impresario called "The Boss." In the company of outcasts, Hawkins accidentally discovers his supernatural abilities. Meanwhile, Justin Crowe, a Methodist pastor in the small Californian town of Mitern, is plagued by apocalyptic dreams and visions. He himself also possesses long-suppressed extraordinary abilities. Ben and Brother Justin, both torn from their lives, discover that the world they knew has once again been plunged into an ancient conflict between Light and Darkness, and they are the main players in this battle.
