In 1996, a catastrophe occurred when deadly viruses wiped out ninety-nine percent of the human population. The survivors were forced to live underground. The story begins in the year 2035, as scientists attempt to use a time machine to travel to the past and prevent the disaster. One of the volunteers is prisoner James Cole, who, due to an imprecise time jump, ends up in 1990. He is arrested by the police and placed in a mental institution after trying to explain to a medical panel that he is from the future. His mission is to uncover information about an eco-terrorist group called the Army of the 12 Monkeys, believed to be responsible for releasing the virus. After returning, he explains to the scientists that they sent him to the wrong time, and he is immediately sent on another mission. Briefly, he finds himself in the trenches of World War I, where he is shot in the leg, and then transported to the year 1996. There, he once again meets Dr. Railly, kidnaps her, and together they continue the search for the 12 Monkeys...
