The Tiger and the Dragon is an epic love story set in ancient China. The beautiful and powerful Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun-Fat) is one of the finest masters of the highest martial art of his time. At a secret training camp, he meets his old girlfriend Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh). He once killed her fiancé in a fight, but the affection between them is mutual.
Li asks Shu Lien, who continues on to Beijing, to hand over his sword, the legendary Gree Destiny, to Mr. Tche, a respected leader and friend of Shu Lien's father. Li wants to use this gesture to begin a new phase in his life after years of struggle. He goes to the mountains to pay homage to the memory of an ancient master who was poisoned years ago by the criminal Jade Fox (Cheng Pei-pei).
Meanwhile, in Beijing, Shu Lien meets the governor's daughter, the beautiful Jen (Zhang Ziyi), who is an admirer of Shu Lien's way of life. Shortly afterwards, the sacred sword is stolen from Mr. Tche's house and the manner shows the style of Jade Fox. Shu Lien is the first to follow the trail of the theft. The Green Destiny is in the hands of Jade Fox and it is up to Li Mu Bai to retrieve it and avenge all the dead at the same time. He's willing to give his life for it...
