Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (Tom Cruise) loves piloting fighter jets to death. So much so, in fact, that he has successfully resisted promotion in the US Air Force for over thirty years because it would have forced him out of the cockpit and into a heated office. Plus, Maverick has always been a magnet for trouble, which is also quite inconsistent with a military career. The pilot, however, is a bravura one, perhaps the very best, and so he gets an offer to become an instructor for the elite fighters of the Top Gun program, which he's supposed to prepare for a task that falls into the Mission Impossible category. In addition to this one, Maverick will also have to handle one difficult private mission. One of the pilots he has to prepare for action is Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), the son of his friend and navigator Goose. Those familiar with the first Top Gun know that Goose died when he unsuccessfully ejected from an out-of-control fighter piloted by Maverick. And his son blames his father's death on him. Maverick doesn't want Bradley to suffer the same fate as his father. Yet he realises that the chances of one of the pilots not surviving the planned air operation are not remote...
