It's 1991 and veteran CIA agent Nathan Muir (Robert Redford) is on his last day on the job. All that's left to do is pack up, say goodbye and retire. But a phone call from Hong Kong wakes him up and fundamentally changes the course of the next 24 hours. Nathan learns that his former protégé, student and co-worker Tom Bishop (Brad Pitt) is in serious trouble. He is in a Chinese prison, accused of espionage and facing death.
Fearing an international incident, the CIA takes him off the streets. Tom's rescue is too great a risk for the US. So everything depends on Muir, who suspects from the start how the incident happened and is also aware that the new CIA leadership has sidelined the "old school".
