In this crime story, the South Boston State Police take on Irish-American organized crime. Young undercover cop Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) is tasked with infiltrating a mob syndicate led by gang boss Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson). While Billy quickly gains Costello's trust, Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon), a hardened young criminal who infiltrated the state police as an informant for the syndicate, rises to a position of power in the Special Investigations Unit.
