Sherlock Holmes used to be the smartest man in the parlour... until now. However, there is a new criminal mind on the scene - Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris), who is not only Holmes' intellectual equal, but whose sense of wrongdoing, coupled with his complete lack of a sense of conscience, may actually help him surpass the famous detective. When the Austrian Crown Prince is found dead, the evidence, as interpreted by Inspector Lestrade (Eddie Marsan), seems to point to suicide. But Sherlock Holmes deduces that the prince was the victim of murder, which is, moreover, only a piece of a larger and far more sinister mystery constructed by Professor Moriarty.
While on entertainment duty, Holmes finds a clue in an underground gentlemen's club where Holmes and his brother Mycroft Holmes (Stephen Fry) are drinking away Dr. Watson's last night of freedom. It is here that Holmes meets Sim (Noomi Rapace), a gypsy fortune teller who sees more than she reveals. The investigation becomes even more dangerous when Holmes, Watson and Sim reach the old continent. The cunning Moriarty is always one step ahead, spinning webs of death and destruction. It's all part of a bigger plan that, if it works, will change the course of history.
