Secret Service agent Frank Horrigan (Clint Eastwood), plagued by his failure to protect J.F.K., gets a second chance when, 30 years after the Dallas assassination, the President's life is threatened by professional assassin Mitch Leary (John Malkovich), a former CIA officer who has vowed to kill the President. The film is the story of a man seeking his own redemption. He must save the life of America's top official, even if it means sacrificing his own. In doing so, Frank encounters resistance from his own colleagues, who disapprove of his confrontational attitude and are not convinced that Leary poses a real threat. Horrigan must deal with the constant criticism of his superiors and the twisted psychology of a professional killer who is a truly formidable adversary.
