Dr. Louis Creed (Jason Clarke), his wife and two children have moved from the city to the countryside, to a large house on the edge of the forest. It hides a pet cemetery where local children have always buried their animals, whether they died naturally or were victims of the busy road that cuts through the town.
While Louis, a doctor, takes a pragmatic approach to death as a definitive end, his wife Rachel (Amy Seimetz) has huge issues with the subject of death after horrific childhood experiences and, most importantly, wants to protect her children from the "knowledge of finality."
When a neighbor, Jud Crandall (John Lithgow), finds their daughter Ellie's cat, Church, lying dead by the side of the road, the parents suddenly don't know what to tell their daughter. It is Jud who reveals to Louis that if they bury the cat in the animal cemetery as soon as possible, they won't have to say anything to her. The cat will come back. But a little different. Wilder.
