Edith Cushing (Mia Wasikowska) is a very emancipated girl for her time, with a literary talent and an unpleasant childhood trauma, which she deals with by writing. A mysterious stranger, Sir Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston), likes her writing, and she likes him for a change.
So much so, in fact, that after her father's tragic death, she soon puts her grief aside and marries him. The marriage makes her co-owner of the Purple Hill estate, dominated by a stately but dilapidated Victorian house whose leaky roof lets rain, snow and leaves fall into the entrance hall. Edith certainly doesn't feel at home within its gloomy walls.
Contributing to this is the aloofness of her sister-in-law Lucille (Jessica Chastain) and the many frightening visions that have followed her since she first crossed the threshold. While Edith is scared to death, her curiosity drives her to uncover the secrets the house is trying to bury. That her life is always on the line in this quest is perhaps needless to say...
