On his deathbed, Tom's father has only one wish: that his son would go West and finally turn from a wimp into a man. The dying man has three old friends - Holy Joe, Bull and Monkey Smith - who will take care of him now, he just has to get there. And because Tom is a dutiful son, he sets out on his journey. In his trunk is a complete outfit for fox hunting, for he supposes this is the kind of clothing that cultured Westerners prefer.
When Tom reaches his destination, however, he is in for a rude awakening. Although he's as brave as a lion, he's simply found himself in a completely inappropriate place - after all, he even rode into town on a bicycle! His father's friends realise that they have to get to work as quickly as possible, because it's going to be an incredible task to make Tom a man. Meanwhile, Tom falls in love with local beauty Candida, but there's a catch to their romance. Bob, a tough cattleman, is also in love with Candida, and - as a few encounters have shown - Tom doesn't stand a chance against her...
Under the care of Bull, Holy Joe and Monkey Smith, however, Tom learns to use both his fists and his revolver, and when confronted with Bob again, he decimates his opponent completely. Tom wins the hand of the beautiful Candida... but loses his friends. Fearing that Tom is making the town too civilized for their tastes, the three set out to find new territory...
