TV weatherman Phil Connors (Bill Murray) is caught in a massive snowstorm on his way to the Pennsylvania town of Punxsutawney to cover the annual Groundhog Day celebrations.
From that moment on, he finds himself trapped in a time loop that forces him to keep waking up to the same day, February 2. In his world, he encounters the same people every day, but they don't realise that Groundhog Day repeats itself over and over again.
This gives him a certain advantage - he can find out what a woman expects from a man, and the next day behave exactly to impress her. Fortunately, he has a girl nearby to test this on. Her name is Rita (Andie MacDowell), Phil's patient producer, who has to put up with his tantrums, excessive demands and surly moods. Phil's character gradually changes and he gains Rita's sympathy. When they wake up together one day, a new day is upon them...
