The French adventure story The Man from Rio is certainly one of the cinematic ancestors of Indiana Jones. It tells of the incredible adventures of a young Frenchman chasing his fiancée's kidnappers across the world, all for the mythical treasure of the vanished Maltek civilisation.
Adrien Dufourquet, a soldier on basic duty, comes to Paris for a week's leave to visit his fiancée Agnes Villermos. But she is kidnapped by mysterious men who are searching for three statues, the only relics of a lost civilisation and the keys to a mythical treasure. Adrien is a man of action, so he immediately sets out to pursue the kidnappers.
His journey takes him from Paris to Rio de Janeiro, then to the capital Brasilia, into the depths of the Brazilian rainforest and finally back to Paris. All this in a story where one event succeeds another, the scenery changes with miraculous speed and the hero constantly finds himself in danger of his life, from which he always manages to escape at the last moment, only to find himself in further danger...
