On John Tanstall's farm, young men from the bottom of society found homes and work. Tanstall also educates them, teaching them to read and write and to follow certain rules. Anyone who doesn't follow the rules must go back to the streets.
A new "addition" comes to the farm, a confident young man called Billy the Kid. Unlike the others, he can read, but his behaviour is a bit eccentric. The sheriff informs Tanstall that the other farmers, Dullen and Murphy, are accusing his boys of raiding their wagons with goods, which has been happening recently, but he fiercely defends his boys.
Although Murphy threatens him personally, he is convinced that as an honest man he has the same rights as the others, to whom he is a thorn in their side. He decides to meet with the governor and expose the real culprits, but Murphy is quicker. He ambushes Tanstall's farm and in a shootout, Tanstall is killed. His men decide to avenge Tanstall, and a small war begins between Murphy's henchmen and Tanstall's boys...
