Young Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) lives with her slightly mad mother Donna (Meryl Streep) on the Greek island of Kalokairi, where they run a slightly fading family hotel. Neither is to be endured, as Sophie is getting married soon. While Donna has purely practical worries about this, Sophie is dealing with one problem - who will walk her down the aisle. In fact, a found mother's diary reveals that Donna had started with three boys at a time critically close to Sophie's conception.
The enterprising girl, who has inherited her mother's eccentricities, doesn't slack off and invites all three to the wedding. And they (flamboyant businessman Sam - Pierce Brosnan, uptight banker Harry - Colin Firth, quirky adventurer Bill - Stellan Skarsgard) do come. Twenty-four hours until the ceremony. During which time the bride will have to find the right man. And since Donna had no idea of the arrival of three reminders of the sins of youth, there will be merriment on Kalokairi even without a wedding.
