In 1959, Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) is at the absolute top, winning the world's toughest motor race, the 24 Hours of Le Mans. After the intrepid Texan's greatest triumph comes a crushing blow - a heart defect discovered by doctors makes it impossible for him to continue racing. Shelby begins a new career as a highly resourceful engineer. He works with a team that includes the brilliant test driver and British champion Ken Miles (Christian Bale).
Miles is not only a top racer devoted to his family, but he is also insufferably arrogant and completely incapable of any compromise. And it is this team of car freaks that Henry Ford II hires to design and build the perfect race car for his car company. Ford decides to take revenge on Enzo Ferrari for finally rejecting his car company's arranged merger with the Ford Motor Company. Ferrari's cars win continuously on the Le Mans circuit from 1960 until 1965.
Shelby, Miles and their small team are determined to put a decisive end to that with the Ford GT40. Against them stand the unbeatable Ferrari, the laws of physics and their own personal demons. Despite the obstacles and constraints thrown in their way by Ford itself, they must develop a revolutionary vehicle that will blow every competitor out of the water. But their efforts are taking a heavy toll - and for these brave men, the victory is worth it...
