The brave rancher John Chisum belongs to the olden days when the land untouched by civilization belonged to the Indians and the white man could only prevail if he had extraordinary courage and perseverance. Then Chisum drove his herd of cattle into New Mexico and became King of Pecos - owner of a vast territory and also of the largest water source in the area.
Today, therefore, he fondly recalls his youth. Little does he know, however, that he will soon have to remember his marksmanship, which he has not used much in this time of peace. Mr. Murphy has settled in the town of Lincoln and has opened a bank and bought all the shops and land around Chisum's territory.
But he is not content with what he has acquired so far - he would like to appropriate Chisum's land as well. Then, of course, he wouldn't just leave the surrounding farmers free water for their herds like Chisum.
