If you didn't hear this classic tale as a child, the filmmakers will retell it during the opening credits for good measure. But then it's on. We find ourselves in a typical medieval town plagued by the usual problems of the time, including the kidnapping of local children, which is said to be the work of the witches who inhabit the surrounding deep woods. The local lawman (Peter Stormare) may claim to be enough on his own, but he's clearly lying to his own pocket. So the mayor invites two celebrities, legendary witch hunters Hansel and Gretel, on a rescue mission. The siblings set out on the trail of the kidnappers with a vigour all their own, and their work soon begins to bear fruit. Unfortunately, it's not what they would have wanted. What they discover is that they are up against forces far more powerful than anything they have faced so far. Despite Hansel's diabetes (he once ate a gingerbread man when he was a child, poor thing!) and Marenka's skeleton in the closet, which is not worth talking about, they set out to fight against powerful odds, but whether they will have a happy ending this time is in the stars...
