Carly Whitten (Cameron Diaz) is a tough New York lawyer who sticks to strict principles when it comes to relationships with the opposite sex. For example, that she never gets involved with married men. She is currently head over heels in love with Mark King (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau). And he returns her love almost unconditionally. After all, what woman wouldn't be delighted to have her partner remember even a seemingly insignificant anniversary? Or waiting for her outside the office with flowers and an invitation to a romantic dinner? But everything ends once and often with a hard impact.
Carly meets this impact when she spontaneously decides to surprise Mark by visiting his Connecticut home unannounced. It's not Mark who opens the door, but his wife Kate (Leslie Mann). This always loyal and devoted housewife is paralyzed by the shock and Carly becomes dangerously angry for a change. Fortunately, instead of directing their anger at each other, Carly and Kate slowly begin to grow closer. This is helped not only by the sordid existence of a common enemy, but also by the discovery that Mark is having another secret love affair, with Amber (Kate Upton), who has also been caught up in Mark's lies. The three eventually join forces and, with the support of Carly's quirky secretary Lydia (Nicki Minaj), start looking for any and all ways to put Mark behind them.
