Hugo Cabret (Asa Butterfield) is an extraordinary boy who, after his father's death, lives in a Paris train station with his alcoholic uncle, who works as a station clock setter. From his dad, Hugo inherits ingenuity and a robot with a heart-shaped keyhole, which might come to life if the right key is inserted into it, to give the boy his father's message. At least he hopes so.
His unquenchable curiosity leads Hugo to a bumbling mechanical toy salesman (Ben Kingsley) and from him to his protégé (Chloe Grace Moretz) who, unbelievably, holds the key to unraveling the mystery of Hugo's life. How did she get it? What secret is her adopted grandparent hiding that no one is allowed to talk about? Is the robot really hiding her father's message? And can Hugo answer all these questions before the hand of the law catches up with him in the form of a stern station guard (Sacha Baron Cohen) and sends him to an orphanage?
