An affectionate, prejudice-free black comedy about life, love and death from director Hal Ashby. Maude is a seventy-nine year old woman obsessed with her zest for life. These two outsiders have nothing in common at first glance, yet they may just make the perfect couple.
Harold lives in opulence with his domineering mother. He tries in vain to attract her attention by endless and always unsuccessful suicide attempts. For his mother, this only means that she should find a girlfriend for her depressed son to cure him of his gloomy thoughts. But none of the hopeful brides can see through Harold's suicidal hobby. And so he is once again left to his solitude. He is an avid funeral goer, for it is in the cemetery that he comes closest to death.
