Sisters Maggie and Rose Feller have seemingly nothing in common except their 8.5 shoe size. They may be best friends, but they are also absolute opposites when it comes to values, goals and lifestyle. Maggie (Cameron Diaz) doesn't miss a single party, graduated high school with her ears scraped, changes jobs like her giant socks, and considers her attractive looks her greatest asset. She is often out of work and survives as a homeless person on the couches of her friends and relatives. Her confidence in her own intellectual abilities is close to zero, she values makeup more than books, and she has an innate talent for choosing the perfect outfit for any occasion.

Rose (Toni Collette) graduated from Princeton and works at a leading Philadelphia law firm. Her beautiful and appropriately decorated apartment allows her to escape the outside world. She works herself into a stupor every day, constantly battles her weight, and is perpetually dissatisfied with what she is wearing. Her low self-esteem when it comes to her appearance has completely cut her off from dating and intimate life. Her only joy in life is her shoes (because they always fit), but unfortunately there are too few opportunities to bring them out of the closet.

A big fight culminates in the two sisters breaking up. After that, they both go through a thorny journey, but at the end of it they start to appreciate each other. Their grandmother (Shirley MacLaine), who appears out of nowhere and whom they had long thought dead, has a hand in this. It is thanks to her that Maggie and Rose find a way to reconcile not only with each other, but also with themselves. What's great about the relationship between these two sisters is that they are complete opposites...
