Moneyball is based on the true story of Billy Beane (Brad Pitt), a former baseball prospect with a glittering career who, after failing to live up to expectations, turned his competitive nature to the administrative side of the sport. At the start of the 2002 season, Billy finds himself in a sticky situation: his poorly funded Oakland Athletics team, also popularly known as the A's, has lost its best players (again) to the lure of big teams (and the hefty salaries that come with it), and he is forced to put his team back in order and start the season with a third of the original budget.

In his desire to win, Billy decides to go against the classic baseball conventions. He takes his focus completely off the baseball diamond and onto the debunked theories of Billy James and hires Peter Brand (Jonah Hill), an intelligent economist who graduated from Yale University. Together they confront common sense, armed with a determination to rethink everything and equipped with the computerized statistical analysis that baseball's administration has long ignored. They come to incredible conclusions and begin recruiting players that the rest of the baseball world deems too unsuitable, too old, too sick or too problematic, but who at the same time are all vastly underappreciated.

As Billy and Peter relentlessly push forward, their new methods and remarkable assemblage of underdogs attract the attention of other teams, the media, fans, and their own team's general manager (Philip Seymour Hoffman), who refuses to cooperate. But this experiment ultimately leads not only to changes in the way baseball is played, but also to a result that finally opens Billy's eyes and takes him to a whole new level...
