TV reporter Kim Baker (Tina Fey) is dissatisfied with her job filled with watching and presenting insignificant stories. So she accepts a brief assignment as a war correspondent in Afghanistan during Operation Enruding Freedom, much to the delight of her boyfriend Chris (Josh Charles), who also travels the world extensively.
She is stationed in Afghanistan with other reporters and befriends Australian correspondent Tanya (Margot Robbie) and Iain (Martin Freeman), a Scottish freelance photographer. Despite the many dangers, Kim remains in Afghanistan for months and years - regardless of his original professional assignment.
Although her status as a woman poses risks in a society that assigns women a limited role, she uses this to her advantage when she manages to pass a camera under her burqa at a religious demonstration, which she reports on. When Iain is kidnapped one day during his travels in the countryside, Kim uses all her local resources and contacts to take action to rescue him...
