ANGELICA, MARQUISE OF THE ANGELS (1964)

The first of a series of films about Angelica that have been known worldwide since the 1960s. Angelica de Sancé de Monteloup is married against her will to the powerful Joffrey de Peyrac, who is said to be a sorcerer. At the beginning, the young girl who has come from the convent feels nothing but fear and loathing for her mysterious husband. However, step by step she discovers the true personality of Count de Peyrac, scientist, philosopher and troubadour, and falls in love with him. One day, the young King of France, Louis XIV, visits the Toulouse mansion of M. de Peyrac. The luxury of what the king calls "a state within a state" and a charming wife to boot, arouse the king's jealousy and the Comte de Peyrac de Morens d'Irristru must be removed!

THE WONDERFUL ANGELICA (1965)

After Count de Peyrac is arrested for witchcraft by order of the King and burned at the Place de Gréve on the last day of January 1661, the young widow Angelica finds her place among the other despised ones, i.e. at the Court of Miracles in Paris, a place where bands of robbers and beggars make their home. Here she meets her childhood friend in Poitou, Nicolas, who has become the leader of the Parisian robbers. However, Nicolas is killed during one of the beggars' brawls. Angelica, with her sons found, begins a new life as a tavern keeper at the Cockroach and later in her own business, the "Red Mask". During this time, she experiences her relationship with the persecuted pamphleteer Claude Le Petit - a real figure of French history (1638 - 1662) - also nicknamed the poet Dirt. After his execution, she trades in chocolate, befriends Ninon de Lenclos (1620-1705) and thoughtfully marries her distant cousin Philippe du Plessis de Belliere...

ANGELICA AND THE KING (1966)

After the execution of her beloved husband Peyrac, Angelique (Michéle Mercier) lived for a time among the Parisian underclass alongside her childhood friend Nicolas. After his death and many adventures, she finally decided to marry her cousin Philippe de Plessis-Bellieres. Her new husband dies unexpectedly on the battlefield and Angelica is summoned back to court by the King to fulfil a demanding diplomatic role. She has to persuade the Persian ambassador Batchary-Bey to sign a treaty of cooperation with France. Bey, however, is so enchanted by her beauty that he imprisons her in his palace. She is rescued from captivity by the Hungarian Count Rakoczi, but the treaty is threatened and the king is furious. Angelica is arrested, but even the king cannot resist her beauty. However, when he sees that he will not win her affection because the shadow of Peyrac's death stands between them, he reveals to Angelica that it was not he who died at the stake. The beautiful marquise's life takes on a new meaning and she sets out to find her lost husband...

THE UNTAMED ANGELICA (1967)

Angelica leaves the court and France to find her husband, the Comte de Peyrac. By the Mediterranean Sea, she boards a royal galley commanded by the court's favourite, the Duc de Vivonne, brother of the king's favourite, Mme de Montespan. After the galley is attacked by pirates, Angelique leaves its deck. Unaware, of course, that the pirate ship's commander - the Rescator - is Joffrey de Peyrac, whom she seeks... She is only saved from drowning by the pirate ship of the Marquis d'Escrainville, a drunkard and woman-hating bastard who only restrains his desire to kill Angelica in order to sell her for a profit on the slave market in Candia (Crete). Here the beautiful marquise is sold to an unknown man in whom Angelica recognises the Count de Peyrac. However, her happiness does not last long, and soon she is kidnapped by the Marquis d'Escrainville, who tries to sell her again and more profitably...

ANGELIQUE AND THE SULTAN (1968)

Angelica is kidnapped by the pirate d'Escrainville, who then sells her to a slave trader for the harem of the Sultan of Morocco. This is how the Countess de Peyrac meets Osman Ferraji, a wise eunuch who plans to make her the third wife of Sultan Mulay Ismail, and thus the ruler of Morocco. Joffrey de Peyrac pretends to be one of the Galleys in order to reach Meknes, Morocco, to join with influential friends and try to save his wife. Meanwhile, Angelica resists the demands of Osman Ferraji and the powerful Sultan. This persistence wins her the sympathy of Colin Paturel, a Norman who has been the slave king of Meknes for fifteen years. When several slaves attempt to escape, Angelica is taken in...
